The authors address the problem of rerouting and spare capacity planning for link failure scenario in order to buildup survivable WDM networks. A simple heuristic self-healing algorithm, using state matrix of the network for path rerouting, is used as solution technique. Then, parameters mat affect the optimal planning of spare resources are introduced and studied on different network topologies. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the impact of each parameter are investigated via simulations. Results show that the heuristic algorithm should be suitably near - optimal for real - world planning applications. The results can be used in the analysis and optimization of the wavelength routing in wavelength division multiplexed optical networks.
