An adaptive energy recovery circuit to reduce the power consumption of the address driver IC's in an AC plasma display panel (AC PDP), is presented. The proposed circuit uses the instantaneous current whose value are varied in accordance with the display condition, during charging and discharging the selected column electrodes of a PDP, to mainly recover the energy lost by the capacitive displacement current. This circuit can be realized with a small number of part counts, and gives the zero voltage switching characteristics to all the switches in the address driver IC's, essential for the design of a large-size and high-resolution panel. The capacitive displacement current and the required reactive power arc greatly reduced in the proposed circuit. A comparative analysis and experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed energy recovery circuit.
