Economic Evaluation of Wastewater Irrigation and Treatment-Impacts on Groundwater Management

Population growth increases sewage quantity, which should be treated and discarded. Reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation may serve both as water source and a disposal outlet for wastewater, and should be followed by appropriate treatment processes to decrease potential environmental hazards. These impacts can be diminished if combining appropriate treatment processes. In this paper we focus on salinity, usually higher in wastewater following domestic use, which deteriorates groundwater quality. We have developed a model which incorporates various water sources and treatment processes, and enables to assess and manage the accelerated contamination of groundwater caused by chlorides.
