AN INTEGRATED DATA SECURITY ENVIRONMENT FOR INTRANET- BASED MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

It is clear that intranets represent a large, growing, and active market segment -- one that consists of technically aware, early adopters. It is also clear that as intranets becomes a more important business tool, software products, which facilitate finding and distributing information over intranets, will be commercially viable. It is in this vein that more and more organisations are building their Management Information Systems (MIS) over corporate intranets and web-based applications, thereby exploiting the ease of deployment of information systems and user-friendliness of Internet browser interfaces. As the use of Intranets and Extranets has grown, so has the need for security. The TCP/IP protocols and technology are inherently designed to be open. Therefore, unless proper precautions are taken, data can readily be intercepted and/ or altered - often without any party being aware of the security breach. This paper presents a data security environment for TCP/IP intranet-based corporate MIS achieved through an integration of most robust network and data security techniques.
