Implementation of Mobile Internet and Real Time Services over IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs

This paper describes the implementation of mobile Internet and real-time video conferencing services over standard-based IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. The dynamic host configuration protocol is used to configure mobile Internet addresses dynamically. Packet video and voice transmission is achieved via the TCP/IP protocol. The performance of the video conferencing system has been evaluated. Results show that although current 802.11 wireless LANs are limited by the 2 Mbit/s bit rate and other protocol constraints, they are capable of supporting slow moving video transmission over TCP/IP with minimal distortion.
