CAST HIGH SPEED TOOL STEELS WITH NIOBIUM ADDITIONS

High speed tool steels are used not only for metal cutting, but also in wood and textile industries. As cast and wrought materials, HSS tools show a broader application range compared to tool materials which are produced by powder metallurgy. However, in the case of specially formed tools the production from bulk material requires high machining costs. In this study an attempt is made to produce cast HSS tools. The microstructure is modified by niobium additions and proper heat treatment. As a result, the toughness could be enhanced to 2000 MPa level without any loss in the hardness and satisfactory cutting results could be obtained.
