The Navy Shore, or the land-based facilities and infrastructure of the Navy, consists of 73 bases worldwide, broken into 12 Regions. All aspects of Navy forces are touched by energy, from expeditionary to acquisition. In working to reduce its energy consumption, the Navy Shore is making significant investments in the energy efficiency of its facilities and utility distribution infrastructure. The required next step is to invest in secure, micro-grid (or 'Smart Grid') technologies which will provide the capability to integrate this infrastructure to enable visibility and control of energy distribution and demand. These capabilities could then be used to prioritize critical assets in an emergency and control costs in the Navy's diverse local utility billing structures.
