Currently, developments of new safe driving assistance systems are well underway. Thesesystems take into account human factors through interaction with the driver and operate in acoordinated manner. This paper discusses a key technology for such driver assistance systems– driver status estimation technology. Shown will be some experimental data concerning theestimation of unsafe driving status and alertness level.Regarding the unsafe driving status estimation, the possibility of realizing a warning systemwith high driver acceptability during actual driving was indicated through informationutilization of both face and eye gaze directions. In addition, the possibility of estimation ofalertness level only through the eyelids open/close status was shown.
