In order to improve traffic safety, the safety for the road workers and improve traffic flowthrough the road works, the Danish Road Directorate (DRD) is establishing temporary ITS at twomajor motorway widening projects.Using stationary road marking to regulate traffic on a construction site may impede the progressof widening the motorway, as it can restrict the free movement of road works and transport ofmaterials to and from the construction site. Furthermore, it’s a tedious process that requires closeinspection, every time a change is made to the sign boards.Conventional sign post would have been especially difficult to implement at the case locationspresented in this paper, as the two particular projects under consideration as will employ two differentapproaches in widening the carriageway. In one of the projects, the carriageway wideningwill be done symmetrically, whereas on the other location asymmetrical widening will be utilized.One feature common in these project is that the road works shift from one location to another asthe project proceeds. This means that system design has to be flexible enough to allow managingissues such as lane closures or limited lane usability, as during the extension of the carriagewaysthe traffic lanes will be frequently shifted to keep in pace with the ever moving road works.Hence, the ITS has inbuilt flexibility that allows the lateral displacement of the lane control signboards when the traffic lanes are shifted.
