A rail vehicle wheel set is loaded by various different dynamic load pairs primarily in vertical and lateral direction. From durability point of view, each rotation of the wheel causes a stress cycle that is added to a number of > 10 cycles in the service life of these components. Facing current and future development of high speed rail vehicles, the durability performance of wheelsets is even more demanding than ever. Hence appropriate testing technologies are needed to supply reliable and quick laboratory based testing for fatigue as well as crack growth experiments.
