This case study describes the development and implementation of an electronic examination (e-examination) application at the Innsbruck University School of Management for undergraduate students studying Information Systems. The Department of Information Systems was confronted with the situation of an increasing amount of students, long time of exam correction processes and a high-level administrative overhead. As a result, the Department developed an e-examination system with the key objective of optimizing the examination process by accomplishing benefits for all participants. The initial project has started in 2002 and is still in use. Therefore, the authors can use their longitudinal empirical study for designing a stakeholder analysis with special focus on the SWOT-technique with the identification strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats confronting for the three key stakeholders (students, teachers, administration offices). The experiences gained over the last five years made it possible to give a best practice example of using an e-examination system at University level. In the first part of the paper, the general e-learning situation at the Innsbruck University is described. Then the authors focus on the development and use of their developed e-examination model and discuss their empirical results from a stakeholder view and make a discussion of this best practice approach.
