Abstract: Infrared thermography allows the instant passivethermal mapping of a remote surface, noninvasively andwithout contact. Under controlled conditions precisiontemperature measurements can be made of these surfaces.IR thermographic equipment has evolved to the pointwhere it is portable, versatile, rugged and reliable;applications are found in virtually every phase ofmanufacturing and materials inspection. This papertraces the evolution of IR thermography from itsbeginnings to the present. Current commerciallyavailable equipment is classified and described and anoverview of applications is presented. Finally severalspecific examples of industrial applications aredescribed and illustrated, and a glimpse of the nearfuture is offered based on the most recent developmentsin equipment and software.!0
