USEPA and many state regulatory guidance documents recommend a multiple lines of evidence (MLE) approach to evaluating the vapor intrusion pathway. Stratigraphic analysis can provide insight into the fate and transport of chlorinated solvents in the subsurface, and a compelling line of evidence for vapor attenuation, particularly in support of the evaluation of potential vapor intrusion at future buildings. Detailed stratigraphic analysis can demonstrate the correlation between areas of impacted soil vapor and specific lithologic features to support the development of conceptual site models. This line of evidence can be applied independently, or in support of fate and transport modeling to delineate areas suitable for unrestricted development at sites with impacted soil vapor.
