Recent Experience in Automatic Tail Void Grouting with Soft Ground Tunnel Boring Machines

Tail void grouting is a critical operation in tunnelling using pressurised tunnel boring machines.rnEffective grouting helps to minimise settlement, while holding the rings in place during shieldrnadvance. The mixes and behaviour of grouts from projects in Egypt, Singapore, Florida and thernNetherlands are reviewed. The use of sand based mortar grouts is gaining in popularity. For theserngrouts to be effective, the rheology has to be such that the grout prevents the rings from floating evenrnbefore the grout sets. Recent research helps to understand this phenomenon. Some of the tests that canrnbe used for the grout are outlined.
