FEM analysis of this case study illustrates the deficiency in improving the stability of the knoll using segmented PVD layout and low strength basal geogrid. The back analysis also illustrates the need for finite strain analysis, using updated mesh with pore pressure and coupled consolidation, in order to obtain reasonable predictions in cases where there is relatively large deformation as compared to the thickness of fill. Modeling of foundation soil with PVD installation was performed by replacing the foundation soil's original vertical permeability with an equivalent vertical permeability. Before the analysis of the case study, calibration of the FEM code, PLAXIS 8, and verification of the modeling technique were done by back analyzing the Muar test embankment on PVD stabilized foundation soil.
