This paper recovers and describes a number of majorrnstatements with respect to the vision, mission andrntechnological approaches of the Technological ResearchrnProject (TRP) "EO Domain Specific KnowledgernEnabled Services" (project acronym KES-B), which isrncurrently under development at the European SpacernResearch Institute (ESRIN) under contract "16397/02/ISB".rnResulting from the on-going R&D activities, the KES-Brnproject aims are to demonstrate with a prototype systemrnthe feasibility of the application of innovativernknowledge-based technologies to provide services forrneasy, scheduled and controlled exploitation of EOrnresources (e.g.: data, algorithms, procedures, storage,rnprocessors,…), to automate the generation of products,rnand to support users in easily identifying and accessingrnthe required information or products by using their ownrnvocabulary, domain knowledge and preferences. Thernultimate goals of KES-B are summarized in thernprovision of the two main types of KES services: 1st thernSearch service (also referred to as Product Exploitationrnor Information Retrieval; and 2nd the Productionrnservice (also referred to as Information Extraction), withrnthe strategic advantage that they are enabled byrnKnowledge consolidated (formalized) within the system.rnThe KES-B system technical solution approach isrndriven by a strong commitment for the adoption ofrnindustry (XML-based) language standards, aiming tornhave an interoperable, scalable and flexible operationalrnprototype. In that sense, the Search KES services buildsrnon the basis of the adoption of consolidated and/orrnemergent W3C semantic-web standards. Remarkablyrnthe languages/models Dublin Core (DC), UniversalrnResource Identifier (URI), Resource DescriptionrnFramework (RDF) and Ontology Web Languagern(OWL), and COTS like Protégé [1] and JENA [2] arernbeing integrated in the system as building bricks for thernconstruction of the KES based Search services. On thernother hand, the Production KES services builds on toprnof workflow management standards and tools. In thisrnside, the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL),rnthe Web Services Definition Language (WSDL), andrnthe Collaxa [3] COTS tool for workflow managementrnare being integrated for the construction of the KES-BrnProduction Services. The KES-B platform (web portalrnand web-server) architecture is build on the basis of thernJ2EE reference architecture.rnThese languages represent the mean for the codificationrnof the different types of knowledge that are to bernformalized in the system. This representing thernontological architecture of the system. This shall enablernin fact the interoperability with other KES-basedrnsystems committing as well to those standards. Thernmotivation behind this vision is pointing towards thernconstruction of the Semantic-web based GRID supplychainrninfrastructure for EO-services, in line with thernINSPIRE initiative suggestions.
