Finite-length effects on the band of deformed metallic carbon nanotubes

Based upon the tight-binding and metallic band model, we have studied the band structure of deformed carbon nanotubes. Using the quantum box boundary condition, we have discussed how the finite-length of the tubes affects the energy bands of two types of deformed carbon nanotubes. It is found that the conductor-semiconductor phase transitions will appear for the finite length carbon nanotubes, and the energy gaps of those tubes are found to oscillate periodically with both the tube length and the deformation strain.
