HURVA SYNAGOGUE: LOUIS I. KAHN AND THE THRESHOLD OF LIGHT

The work of Louis I. Kahn has had profound influence on the role of daylighting in architectural design. Kahn's theories and design principles address the tangible and intangible phenomena of light. The Hurva Synagogue, an unbuilt work, was studied to discern the ways in which Kahn used daylighting as a threshold between the physical and the spiritual realms. A 1/4" scale model was tested under both clear and overcast skies to provide qualitative and quantitative analyses.
