The TIA/EIA/IS-2000 standard introduced the Dedicated Control Channel to better handle signaling and traffic in packet data calls. Together with this new channel, the concept of Control Hold mode was also introduced. Although these features were specifically designed to support packet data calls (in what is commonly referred to as P2 mode), it was not evident if they provided a clear advantage over the traditional Fundamental Channel (P1 mode). This paper presents the advantages and drawbacks of both modes and quantifies their benefits. It proves that there is not a mode that outperforms the other under all circumstances, and that the benefits of each mode depend on the nature of the data being transmitted. Ultimately, the election of one or the other mode should be based on a tradeoff between throughput and capacity.
