El farol is a bar on canyon road in santa Fe at which a band used ot play Irish music on Thursday evenings. Having been born and raised in Belfast, W.Brian Arthur, and economist at the santa Fe Institute, was more than mildly interestedin going to hear this band perform its weekly musical renditions of his childhood. But he was less than enthusiasticabout attending the performance if the thorght that too many pushing-and-shoving, drunken louts would be there, too. Trying to decide wheter or not to go to El farol on Thursday nights led Arthur to formulate what might be termed the "El Farol Problem." It is a prototypical example of what in today's parlance is called a "complex, adavptive system." Here's how it goes.
