The publication of recent standards for safety instrumented systems has lead to the need for more explicit understanding of their function and integrity in order to ensure that they are designed and managed correctly. For existing systems this brings about a need for assessment, which poses particular challenges for batch chemical plant which has a flexible operational role. This paper describes the development of a method for determining the required safety integrity levels for safety instrumented systems fitted to batch reactors, and its application to a plant containing a large number of such reactors, of varying design characteristics, and intended for a wide range of possible duties.
