A BIOREACTOR LANDFILL - TWO YEAR STATUS REPORT

The last 20 acres of a 100 acre Central Illinois landfill were designed with bioreactor components, including leachate recirculation and gas extraction. The bioreactor section consists of a Subtitle D design with a basic subsurface recirculation system. The recirculation system has effectively handled all leachate generated to date. Approximately 800,000 tons of waste was placed in the bioreactor section. Two years of data will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the bioreactor approach to waste disposal. The evaluation will review leachate generation and quality, settlement, landfill gas management and costs. Selected indicators will be compared to the performance of a standard landfill.
