Based upon the data contained in this paper, it can be concluded that leachate evaporation can provide operating reliability and an effective means to beneficially utilize landfill gas in a manner that provides lasting benefits directly to the landfill owner and operator. Benefits to be realized include long-term predictable costs for managing leachate and landfill gas, positive odor control, reduced liability in terms of off-site transfer of leachate and decreased administrative costs. An effective leachate evaporation system should incorporate appropriate design features to meet environmental and technical requirements as discussed above. The equipment should be designed and built to operate for many years in a hostile environment with minimal operating and maintenance requirements. The system should comprise quality components and quality fabrication techniques utilizing materials that will stand the rigors of time at processing conditions. Efficiency is a function of on-line performance and continuous processes offer maximum on-line availability. A good reference point for environmental compliance is the Regulatory Agency with responsibility for the site where a leachate evaporation project is installed. The Agency should be able to advise if the equipment meets the environmental concerns discussed herein. Regulatory inspection officials may also be able to provide important insight into the performance of the equipment. When properly operated and maintained, well-designed leachate evaporators have a proven track record of performance. Make sure that the manufacturer has an experienced staff of operations, maintenance and engineering professionals to properly get the system permitted, installed, commissioned and running smoothly. In addition, long-term support must be available to assure years of operating performance and cover equipment warranty issues for the full life of the leachate evaporation project.
