Structural Optimization for Tall Building Design in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world and has been well known for its skyline of tall buildings. The continuing need for more commercial and residential space has resulted in extremely high land costs and soaring property prices. Structural engineers in Hong Kong have to face the challenge of not only designing safe and functional buildings in a relatively short time, but also ensuring that the design produced must be optimal in the sense of minimum structural cost, maximum structural efficiency and maximum usable floor area. This paper presents a computer aided optimization technique for the structural design of tall buildings in which structural steel, reinforced concrete or a combination of mixed or composite steel and concrete may be considered as construction materials. The effectiveness of the optimization technology has been demonstrated through a number of actual building projects, which are under design and construction in Hong Kong.
