Management of Oil Gas Exploration and Production in the Zamrud Conservation Area

This paper describes how Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI)rnmanages the development of oil and gas production in thernZamrud conservation area. This management began with arn“green” seismic project, “zero discharge” drilling, producedrnwater management, preservation of nature, and includesrndelivering oil to the sales point. The challenges come not onlyrnfrom internal issues in preserving the environment during oilrnfield operations, but also from the cultivated surroundingrnareas, which leads to growing pressure on the conservationrnarea.rnAs global energy demand continues to grow, the oil andrngas companies are expanding their exploration andrnproduction activities into some of the most sensitive andrnremote ecosystems. The Zamrud field is one of the examplernsensitive ecosystems where CPI is exploring and producingrnoil and gas. The history of oil and gas development in thernsensitive tropical ecosystems has been marked by conflictsrnwith the environmentalists and isolated indigenousrncommunities. However, CPI in line with its vision, missionrnand values in preserving its area of operation hasrnimplemented viable techniques, technologies and innovativernmanagement approaches – as well as improvedrncommunications among companies, governments and localrncommunities – which have increased the potential to reducernthe risks of oil and gas development.rnHigh commitment to the environment, which is reflectedrnin an integrated effort between the government, CPI, and thernlocal people and other institutions, has resulted inrnsuccessfully preserving the conservation area. Application ofrnthe latest drilling and production technology has contributedrnto the success in maximizing oil production and at the samerntime preserving the environment.rnCPI manages exploration and production operations thatrnhave proven to be good practices for the future, and hasrnimplemented viable techniques to ensure conservation of thernenvironment while exploring for and developingrnhydrocarbons for the Government of Indonesia.
