Seattle Public Library as Place: Nonparametric Analyses of CommunityPerceptions and Attitudes

In an attempt to characterize the role(s) – social,rnpolitical, cultural, or informational – of anrnindividual library in the lives of communityrnmembers, we conducted 226 interviews amongrnpeople within and nearby the newly-constructedrnCentral Library building of the Seattle PublicrnLibrary. This poster presents the results ofrnexploratory and nonparametric quantitativernanalyses of coded qualitative data to revealrnpotentially fruitful associations between thernparticipants' characteristics and their perceptionsrnand attitudes toward the Central Library as arnphysical or symbolic space. While not attemptingrnto generalize beyond our sample, thesernassociations may nevertheless be useful to guidernfuture studies on the roles of libraries in society.
