Implementation of effective techniques and procedures for treatment of contaminated sites tornremove or minimize the concentration of pollutants constitutes the fundamental aim of remediation andrnpollution mitigation programmes. The techniques of removal of the offending pollutants are selected based onrnthe physico-chemical and biological considerations. Finite difference method (FDM) has been adapted hereinrnto solve and study the decontamination of a polluted stream using fresh water and bioremediation of petroleumrncontaminated soil using composting applying 1-D model. The efficacy of the model has been studiedrnidentifying the significant processes of contaminant migration, such as advection, diffusion-dispersion orrndecay or combination of these. The treatability time for removal of sodium ion, chloride ion andrndichloromethane (DCM) from a deposited site by soil washing with clean water has been presented in thisrnpaper and helps the field engineers to take decision for selecting appropriate method of remediation. Therncomputer program, REMEDIATE has been developed to solve the model.
