Since its development in the 1960s, the well-known and informative Rotating Pressure Vessel Oxidation Test (RPVOT - formerly RBOT) has been run using a liquid bath to bring the oil sample to test temperature and to apply temperature control. Despite the pertinent information provided by the RPVOT regarding the initial and remaining life of the lubricant, maintenance of the bath oil - continuously at 150℃ - gave considerable problems with odor (most often requiring specially ventilated hoods and the need for periodically exchanging up to 80 liters of bath oil.
