For health monitoring and troubleshooting applications, there are benefits to non-contacting instrumentation for turbomachinery vibration measurement. These include machine access and shutdown limitations, temperature limits in harsh environments, and test setup times. The laser Doppler and acoustic intensity probes are two options that were recently explored for a unique test application that required non-contacting instrumentation. This paper describes the background of acoustic intensity measurements, compares its advantages and disadvantages to conventional accelerometers and laser velocimeters, and provides insight into the instrumentation selection criteria for turbomachinery health monitoring.
