Stenosis of the coronary arteries is commonly treated by percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty combined with endovascu-lar stent implantation. Endovascular stents coated with hydrophilic polymers have been shown to exhibit reduced platelet reactivity and accumulation in-vivo compared to uncoated metal stents. These coatings may decrease the risk of thrombosis and can potentially be loaded with therapeutic agents that inhibit restenosis. We report here the radiation grafting of hydrophilic polymers on stainless steel enhanced through the use of novel metal alkoxide bonding agents. The resulting hydrophilic surfaces are highly adherent, stable, and lubricious.
