Dexamethasone-loaded micelles were able to be internalized by rBMSCs and to release dexamethasone in a pH-dependent manner. Pre-culture of rBMSCs with the micelles for 24 h prior seeding onto gelatin hydrogels also resulted in enhanced in vitro osteogenic differentiation. Moreover, when in an in vivo setting, the rBMSCs pre-cultured with the micelles for 24 h and seeded onto gelatin hydrogels promoted a superior in vivo bone formation, which enhanced rBMSCs osteogenic differentiation in a dose-dependent fashion.
