EFFICIENT PRODUCTION OF LIQUID SUGAR IN CANE SUGAR MILLS AND CANE REFINERIES

After more than 20 years of fierce competition with High Fructose Corn Syrups, significant amounts of industrial liquid sugar are still produced in North-America from beet and cane. Some market applications have proven to be specific to liquid sucrose and inaccessible for HFCS. In other countries where cane is a major crop, such as Brazil or Mexico, liquid sugar and medium invert syrups can be the main liquid sweetener ingredients for the industrial market. Modern process technology can be applied for the production of these liquid sweeteners from various raw materials in the most competitive conditions. A variety of processes available to cane sugar mills and cane refineries is reviewed, and their potential competitive advantage is discussed.
