High-definition liquid crystal display light valves with folly integrated driver circuits have been successfully fabricated using high-performance polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistors. The contrast ratio of these light valves is 900:1 or higher, and "ghost images" are drastically reduced in comparison to conventional light valves. The images of these liquid crystal display light valves were improved by using high-performance n-ch polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistors and a smooth surface layer formed on the substrates with thin-film transistors by using a novel planarization process.
