Well controlled vertically aligned VA-NLCDs having a pretilt angle were successfully fabricated using polyimide having alkylbranches, where the obliquely irradiation of non-polarized UV light was adopted. It is suggested that the s-component of the UV light play a rule in preparing main chains for aligning NLC and the p-component takes the part of generating pretilt angle. A detailed condition for this photoalignment will be reported. VA-NLCDs fabricated in this way exhibit a better TB effect compared to those fabricated using rubbing technique.
