Although many countries examining geologic disposal have underground laboratories, the United States' effort at Yucca Mountain may be different from those of other countries in that the undeground testing is required by government regulation. Specificanlly, Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 60.15(b) promulgated by the UNited States Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires that "...site characterization shall include a program of in situ exploration and testing at the depths that wastes would be emplaced."
