摘要

A new approach to compute along-track velocity componentsrnby combining altimetry-based across-track componentsrnand front directions from remote sensing maps ofrnsurface chlorophyll concentration is proposed. The analysisrnfocuses on the South Madagascar region characterizedrnby the strong East Madagascar Current and sharprngradients of surface tracers. The results are comparedrnagainst in-situ observations from three moorings alongrnthe Jason-1 track 196. Accurate information on the totalrnvelocity direction is the key factor for obtaining accuraternestimates of along-track velocities. Although with somernlimitations, surface tracer fronts can be successfully usedrnto retrieve such information.
