The crystalline brittle material ceramic tiles are studied by XRD, XPS, SEM and polarization microscope after ground or polished. The machined surfaces show different combinations of craters (pores), fracture cracks and plastic deformation grooves. The maximum glossiness and minimum surface roughness of ceramic tiles depend on the compositions and micro-structures of materials, and grinding conditions. A thin surface micro-crack layer with fine crystal grains is generated as the mechanical action between grit and ceramic tiles. In polishing, the phase structure of quartz changes from α-SiO_2 to β-StO_2, which cause the breakage of materials easier.
