The general layout of a uniquely designed test stand for noise studies on automotive A/C components isdescribed. This facility was developed around the traditional calorimeter test stand design, but adapted sothat the compressor was located in an anechoic chamber providing an excellent environment for noiseinvestigations. Some of the noise issues that arose upon initial installation and the noise controltreatments to resolve them were discussed. The low background noise from the test stand and anechoicenvironment make the stand ideal for noise investigation on a variety of A/C components. Some exampleuses of the stand for studying compressor noise,’ clutch noise, and muffler performance were alsopresented.
