A fermentation process has been developed for the production of anbiodegradable plastic, poly-β-hydroxybutyric acid (PHB). Thenprocess involves progressive and independent addition of four groups ofnnutrients in a multi-fed-batch mode. Control strategies used for thenaddition of these nutrients varied according to the different processnstages. The control laws developed to implement the control strategiesnare based on an adaptive nonlinear control approach. Careful selectionnof the control strategies and the application of modern controlntechniques resulted in a process with high cell density, high PHBncontent in cells, and PHB of good quality
