A key feature for the increased utilization of spacernrobotics is to automate Extra-Vehicular manned spacernactivities and thus significantly reduce the potential forrncatastrophic hazards while simultaneously minimizingrnthe overall costs associated with manned space. Thernprincipal scope of the paper is to evaluate the use ofrnindustry standard accepted Probability risk/safetyrnassessment (PRA/PSA) methodologies and Hazard Riskrnfrequency Criteria as a hazard control. This paperrnillustrates the applicability of combining the selectedrnProbability risk assessment methodology and hazardrnrisk frequency criteria, in order to apply the necessaryrnsafety controls that allow for the increased use of thernMobile Servicing system (MSS) robotic system on thernInternational Space Station. This document willrnconsider factors such as component failure raternreliability, software reliability, and periods of operationrnand dormancy, fault tree analyses and their effects onrnthe probability risk assessments. The paper concludesrnwith suggestions for the incorporation of existingrnindustry Risk/Safety plans to create an applicable safetyrnprocess for future activities/ programs.
