The method involves assessing the risk of an accident depending on the probability of a collision and the probability of a hazard for at least one second object within a defined area relative to a first object, whereby the collision probability and the hazard probability are determined from the movements of the first object and the at least one second object. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) the use of a controller in a vehicle as an object in the inventive method; and (b) the use of a restraining system in a vehicle as an object in the inventive method.
