Finite element modelling of shear tab connections including damage simulation

Acommon approach to connect steel beams to columns is to use shear tabs. Numerous laboratoryrntest programs of these connections have been completed; however, the development of finite element modelsrnthat accurately capture their behaviour lags behind. A series of full-scale lab tests were carried out at McGillrnUniversity on “standard” and “non-standard” shear tab connections. The results from these tests were used inrnthe development of a finite element model that is capable of simulating the response of the connection underrnload; predict the ultimate resistance and the progression of failure. The intent is to use the model for the futurernevaluation of shear tabs under extreme loading conditions such as combined axial and vertical forces. Previousrnfinite element modelling of shear tabs lacked damage simulation capability, did not include the effect of weldrntearing, and as such often overestimated the connection resistance. This paper will summarize the developmentrnof a finite element simulation model and provide a comparison with the laboratory results.
