Teaching and learning of fundamentals of structural engineering in undergraduate level

This paper describes some common problems that students face in grasping the concepts inrnfundamental engineering subjects such as Engineering Mechanics (Statics and Dynamics), Mechanics of Solidsrnand Structural Analysis. These subjects are taught in the initial years of a student’s life. New students might bernable to receive information about fundamental principles and concepts, but if they are not exposed to real-worldrnsituations it can be hard for them to see their relevance. Thus these subjects can be dry and boring to studentsrnor they can be interesting and enjoyable to learn, depending on the teaching methods and strategies used byrnthe lecturer. The author describes in this paper some simple methods and strategies that he has adopted whichrnincrease student understanding greatly, thus making learning more effective and enjoyable.
