For the convenience of distribution and construction, most pipelines are buried underground.rnBesides corrosion, crack and material flaw, failures occurring in buried pipelines are particularly associated tornstructural damages externally induced by surface loading or permanent ground deformation. In the frameworkrnof structural health monitoring (SHM), this paper presents a real-time technique for safety evaluation of continuouslyrnwelded underground pipelines subjected to external interference by using quasi-distributed wirelessrninclinometers. Based on the multiple inclination measurements, the location of abnormal surface loading and permanentrnground deformation can be identified. Structural deflections are then derived based on the infinite beamrnmodel on elastic foundation and cubic spline interpolation for the estimation of pipeline behavior. Numericalrnsimulations are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed method for detection and localizationrnof external intrusive events as well as the influence of sensor placement and measurement error.
