Nonlinear dynamic analyses are carried out to illustrate the contribution of nonstructural walls in the seismic behavior of three buildings, which suffered moderate damages during the August 17, 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake. Utilizing DRAIN-2DX computer program, each building is modeled as planar frames for two cases: First when the nonstructural walls are ignored, later when the nonstructural walls are introduced in the structural system. Calculations are performed subjected to an earthquake ensemble consisting of 7 design spectrum compatible simulated ground motions. For the sake of simplicity, it is assumed that bilinear hysteresis represents the nonlinear behavior of structural elements, while nonstructural walls are modeled as compression struts. Comparisons for story displacements, drifts, base shear and overturning moment demands are realized for each modeling case. Occurrence and locations of plastic hinges are investigated as well. Finally, it is shown that inclusion of nonstructural walls led more realistic results when compared to the site-observed damage states for each building.
