DETERMINING THE EMC REQUIREMENTS FORELECTROACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS COMPLYING WITHIEC STANDARDS

When the requirements for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and CE marking within the European Union came into being, many of the Standards for electroacoustic instruments such as sound level meters (IEC 60651 and 60804), sound calibrators (IEC 60942) and personal sound exposure meters (IEC 61252) had few or no defined tests to demonstrate that they conformed with these requirements. As it was accepted that these instruments needed more than just general tests given in the EMC Standards to demonstrate properly their compliance, IEC TC29 (Electroacoustics) set up Working Group 18 to amend all relevant Standards produced by TC 29 to include defined EMC requirements and tests to demonstrate the instrument’s conformance. The Convenor of Working group 18 describes in this paper the approach adopted, the performance expected and the tests devised to enable all manufacturers to obtain acceptable levels of EMC performance in this range of widely-used equipment. These tests have now been published, mostly as Amendments to the relevant IEC Standards.
