Emerging Management Practices in Chinese SMBs:An Examination of Western Influence through Globalisation and Overseas Education

Chinese small and medium businesses (SMBs) are becoming the most important sector in Chinese economy.In 2009,SMBs accounted for 99.8% of the country's enterprises and they also contributed 60% of the GDP.Many studies have argued that traditional Chinese culture has a great impact on management practices,especially for SMBs.This explains the distinct practices of Chinese management compared to Western management practices.However,globalisation has had an impact on culture and economy in China and in particular on Chinese SMBs.This paper proposes that this impact in turn will lead to an emerging view of management practices for Chinese SMBs,which has developed out of the influence of globalisation influence.Rather than using culture as a means to categorise management into Western and Chinese styles,the emerging view argues that it is more appropriate to use effectiveness and utility to distinguish management into good or bad management practices regardless of their origins.This paper suggests that not only the Chinese government but SMB owners and their offspring educated in the West are all strong forces in bringing Western management or systems into China.Therefore,globalisation will for Chinese SMBs on management as they will be more focused on selecting the most effectiveness of management practices,regardless of the cultural background.
