The majority of homes with duct distribution systems for either heating or cooling have a significant amount of duct leakage, which induces excessive outdoor air infiltration to a home. Recent studies have confirmed that average duct induced outdoor air leakage rates range between 180 to 329 CFM_(25). Heating and cooling systems are wasting an average of 11 to 26 % of the heating and cooling energy unnecessarily. This paper presents literature findings and recent field study data that shows just how pervasive the duct induced outside air leakage is. Also, this paper offers suggestions for designing and specifying duct systems used in passive solar homes. The goal of this paper is to present a compelling case to passive solar architects and designers that duct design and leakage specification are important. Further, if ducts are incorporated into a passive solar building, a successful project will require that the duct system meet similar criteria outlined in this paper.
