Human neutrophils play an essential role in host defense against infection. An important part of this mechanism is the generation of superoxide and its reactive oxygen derivatives upon cell stimulation. This oxidant production is linked to the activation of a specialized enzyme system, NADPH oxidase, which is composed of two membrane (p22-phox and gp91-phox) and three cytosolic components (p40-phox, p47-phox and p67-phox). The cytosolic phox proteins are translocated and become associated with the membrane phox proteins.
