Variation of Flower Opening and Closing Times in F1 Hybrids of Diurnally and Nocturnally Flowering Daylilies

Nocturnal blooming Hemerocallis species originated in China are Hemerocallis lilio-asphodelus, Hemerocallis citrina, Hemerocallis minor.Eight other species originated in China are all diurnal blooming species.In this research, crosses between three nocturnal blooming species and four diurnal blooming species or cultivars including three reciprocal cross combinations and three other cross combinations were conducted and their F1 hybrids were obtained.The blooming and withering times of all the parents and the F1 hybrids were examined.Their pollinating behaviour was observed.The courses from opening to closing of the flowers were recorded with the use of digital cameras.For the opening times, most F1 hybrids showed nocturnal blooming while the closing times were variable.Our findings showed the possible genetic control of blooming and withering time in Hemerocallis.
